How to make a wall hanging flower box step by step

You can make a wall hanging flower box in a few simple steps. Begin by choosing the material for your flower box—from wood to metal. Cut to the desired size, then assemble and glue the pieces together.

Once ready, you can prime and paint the finished product. You can also give it unique touches. Finally, mount your box and fill it with flowers.

Let’s take a closer look at each of these steps:

Step 1 – Gather your tools and materials

The first step is to collect all the tools and materials for the project. If you don’t already have these, you can easily find them at your local hardware store.

You will need:

Step 2 – Measure and cut the material

Figure out the size you want for your wall flower box. Take accurate measurements for the front, back, sides, and bottom of your box.

Next, cut the material with a saw. Wood, fibreglass, and PVC boards are easy to work with. If you have metal sheets to cut, you will need a circular saw.

Tip: Make sure not to go overboard with the size—the larger the box, the harder will it be to mount on the wall.

Step 3 – Assemble and glue the flower box

Place the bottom piece over a flat surface. Apply high-strength glue around the edges. Stick the front and back pieces to it. Then repeat the process to stick the other pieces in place.

If you’re working with metal, you can weld the joints. But if welding is not your strong suit, you can also glue the pieces. Metal adhesives like epoxy, polyurethane, and super glues are convenient to use.

Step 4 – Clamp and drill the pieces

Clamps will hold the frame in place while the glue is still wet. Use a clamp at each end of your frame.

Once dry, you can drill screw holes in the corners and use a few finishing nails or screws. This will give your flower box extra strength and keep the boards from splitting or warping.

Tip: Drill a bigger hole for drainage. This will help drain excess water and keep your plant roots from rotting.

Step 5 – Prime and paint the box

If you plan to expose your flower box to the elements, it’s best to prime and paint it beforehand. You can choose a colour that will complement your outdoors.

Begin by applying a layer of primer to your flower box. Allow it to dry completely before you apply a coat of paint. A bit of extra care will go a long way.

Step 6 – Hang the flower box

Once you’re happy with your flower box, it’s time to mount it. Choose a wall you want to greenify. Flower boxes are also perfect for turning unsightly walls into blooming pieces of art.

Hold the box against the wall. Then drive four long screws through the back panel. You can also anchor it to a stud wall for extra strength.

Step 7 – Fill it with flowers

The final step is to add flowers to your box. You can fill it with seasonal blooms or turn it into a succulents’ corner. Or maybe you want a kitchen wall box filled with fragrant herbs?

Line the box with gravel before you begin planting for better drainage. Also, make sure the soil you use is right for the plants.

Beautiful and easy wall flower box ideas

Now that your DIY wall flower box is ready, it’s time to use it. You can plant it with perennial vines, make it into a herbaceous garden, grow seasonal blooms, and more. Let’s explore all these creative options.
