Buying new furniture for your garden is a big investment. The average price of garden possessions is £1,265 per home, with the average Brit spending £180 on garden accessories last year alone.
With the rising cost of everything, including garden furniture which leapt 155% during the lockdown, it can be tempting to play it safe and choose plainer outdoor furniture that will last the test of time.
If you’re after something a little less run-of-the-mill, however, then you’ve come to the right place. We’ve rounded up some fabulously funky garden furniture to pep up your garden patch.
1. Beach Bar Gazebo with Stools, Habitat
For a totally tropical beachy vibe, check out this impressive garden beach bar. Serve rum punch and frozen mango daiquiris on the glass bar top and relax on the stylish rattan bar stools. A rattan effect ‘grass’ roof provides shade from the sun on hotter days. We think you’d be hard pushed to find anything much funkier for your summer garden.
2. Coloured Throne, Garden Furniture Centre
Feel like a Queen (or King) every time you sit back and relax on your very own garden throne. This amazing piece has been carefully created from upcycled 44-gallon oil drums. Each throne is completely unique and finished with tough lacquer paint, enabling it to happily withstand life outdoors. You can add a matching footrest to up the comfort and relaxation factor.
We love the fact that this piece is made from recycled materials and, it’s sure to be a talking point in your garden!
3. Kugel Garden Coffee Table, Made
For a splash of urban style, we love this on-trend ombre coffee table. It’s made from glass reinforced concrete so it’s sturdy and will easily double up as seating. It weighs in at 39kg so be sure to position it somewhere it’s going to stay. Accessorise with metal or woven chairs and potted palms.
4. Samoa Modular Corner Sofa Set, Habitat
This clever modular corner sofa set includes locks on the back panels, enabling you to configure the set to fit your space.
Made from FSC-certified eucalyptus, the set comes with handy removable cushion covers that can be popped into the washing machine when needed. You can funk this set up even more by adding bright cushions, strings of lights and even painting the wooden slats to suit your style.
5. Ivy Line Outdoor Metal Fire Pit – Made
Most fire pits will look incredible when lit, but we love the striking design of this rust-coloured, iron fire pit. With its unusual splayed legs, it’s sure to be a talking point in your garden. The beautiful rust-finish will change naturally after the fire pit has been used
6. Manta Low Armchair, made in design
As beautiful as it is funky, this chair has been sculpted from pieces of solid laminate, providing a weather-resistant finish. The chair’s fluid lines and striking looks will ensure that this piece makes a statement wherever it is placed. The chair features built-in wheels for ease of movement.
This chair can be used indoors or out and we think it’s perfectly practical, stylish and fun!
7. Fiji Magic Apple Daybed, Garden Furniture Centre
One of the sweetest and most ingenious items of garden furniture that we’ve seen, this fruity daybed from Garden Furniture Centre will instantly brighten up your outdoor space.
Crafted from long-lasting, realistic synthetic rattan, the seat forms a compact apple-shaped pod once closed. The cushions are made with weatherproof Olefin fabric so they absorb little moisture and dry fast. The top section of the apple has 3 reclining positions, enabling you to get as comfy as possible. The top of the seat rests on the apple’s sturdy stalk when open. It’s a clever and unusual piece of furniture and we think it’ll look just peachy (or should we say apple-y) in any spot.
8. Lugano Textilene Rocking Sun Lounger, BillyOh
It’s hard to think of a better way to relax than on a rocking sunlounger! This unusual design features an integral pillow and foam padded armrests for superior comfort. The practical Textilene fabric is UV and weatherproof and it’s really easy to assemble.
We think a couple of these dotted around a patio or beside the pool will make a fantastically funky addition to your outdoor space.
9. Fatboy Attakle Bench, made in design
You’d probably struggle to find garden furniture that’s much funkier than this balloon sausage dog bench! It doubles up as a garden sculpture when not in use and it’ll delight children and adults alike. Made from sturdy polyurethane, it’s great for the garden, patio, balcony or indoors. Sit on it, pet it, add colourful accessories, garden furniture has never been so much fun. Awoof!
Choose quality pieces
It’s true that the best quality garden furniture is expensive but if you’re able to invest, it’ll last much longer than cheaper items and most likely stay out of landfill. If you’re buying furniture with a metal frame, opt for powder-coated aluminium which won’t chip or rust.
To help your garden furniture last longer, store cushions and lightweight wicker furniture inside in wet weather and over the winter. Protect wooden furniture by covering it or placing it in a shed or garage over winter.
Spread the cost
Most of the items listed are available to purchase with Paypal, Klarna or Clearpay credit options allowing you to spread the cost over a few months.
It can be really hard to visualise how new furniture will look in your outdoor space but you can make a template using cardboard boxes, especially useful for seeing how much floor space it will take up.
If you can, visit the store and try out the furniture before you buy.
Take advantage of sales
Look out for sales and browse online marketplaces too. Sometimes these are the best places to find a bargain, particularly if you’re looking for more eclectic pieces. Check out our best time to buy garden furniture article for more tips.
